What is a scaffold putlog coupler actually used for?
A putlog coupler is used to connect two scaffold tubes at right angles with a single-bolt or wedge-type connection. In tube-and-coupler scaffolding, it is commonly used to secure a putlog or transom to a ledger where the connection arrangement is designed for a putlog coupler. It should be selected for its intended joint rather than treated as a general-purpose scaffold coupler.
Does a BS 1139 putlog coupler have a 6 kN working load?
No. The 6.0 kN figure in BS 1139-2.2 is the minimum characteristic slip resistance obtained under the specified test procedure, not a 6 kN safe working load for site use. The same standard gives an informative safe working load of 0.63 kN for slipping force under the permissive-stress design method. Buyers should therefore not convert the 6 kN test value directly into an allowable scaffold load.
What should I confirm when buying putlog couplers for an existing scaffold stock?
Confirm the scaffold tube outside diameter and wall thickness, coupler body style, bolt and nut arrangement, applicable standard, and the type of joint where the fitting will be used. BS 1139-2.2 also requires product information to identify the specific scaffold tube type and thickness with which each fitting is compatible. For replacement orders, a sample or close-up photos of the existing coupler are useful.
Can I use a putlog coupler instead of a double coupler?
No, not for a connection that is designed to use a structural right-angle double coupler. A putlog coupler uses a simpler single-bolt connection and has different structural performance requirements. Double couplers are normally used for primary right-angle tube-to-tube joints, while putlog couplers are intended for specific putlog or transom connections.
Why does a putlog coupler have only one main clamping bolt?
Its geometry is designed specifically for a right-angle putlog-type connection. BS 1139 defines a putlog coupler as connecting two scaffold tubes at right angles by tightening a single bolt or driving a wedge. This simpler arrangement is one reason it should not automatically be substituted for a double coupler used at a primary structural joint.
When should a used putlog coupler be removed from service?
Do not reuse a coupler if the body is cracked or badly deformed, the jaw no longer seats correctly on the tube, the bolt or nut is damaged, or corrosion and wear prevent secure tightening. The condition of the working surfaces and corrosion protection affects coupler performance, so used fittings should be inspected before being returned to service.
