Why do I need a base collar if the Ringlock standard already has rosettes?
The base collar provides a rosette close to the bottom of the scaffold, allowing the first ledgers to be connected before the main standards are installed. This helps establish the bay dimensions and square the scaffold at ground level. The standards can then be inserted into the socket at the top of the base collars.
Should the bottom ledgers be installed before the Ringlock standards?
In a common Ringlock erection sequence, the base jacks and base collars are positioned first, then the bottom ledgers are connected to the base-collar rosettes. The base jacks can be adjusted while checking that these ledgers are level and the bays are correctly positioned. The standards are then inserted into the base collars.
Can I build Ringlock scaffolding without a base collar?
Some Ringlock configurations allow the base collar to be omitted, but this should be determined by the specific system and erection design rather than treated as a universal rule. A base collar is commonly used because its low-level rosette makes it easier to establish the first ledger level and scaffold bay geometry. One Ringlock technical manual explicitly describes the starter collar as optional in certain erection arrangements.
What is the difference between a Ringlock base collar and a base jack?
They perform different jobs. The base collar provides the first Ringlock connection point for ledgers and connects the standard to the scaffold base. The adjustable base jack is used to level the scaffold and transfer the leg load to the supporting surface. In a typical setup, the base collar sits over the base jack.
Can a Ringlock base collar be used with both fixed and adjustable bases?
Yes, depending on the Ringlock system design. Technical Ringlock manuals show starter collars used over either fixed or adjustable bases. Adjustable base jacks are particularly useful where leveling is required. The base arrangement must still sit on a firm foundation capable of supporting the scaffold load.
What should I measure when buying base collars for my existing Ringlock system?
Do not match the component by overall height alone. Check the inner tube that fits over the base jack, the upper socket that receives the standard, the rosette dimensions and position, the overall collar height, and the corresponding standard and base-jack dimensions. If the order is for replacement stock, drawings or samples are safer than assuming all Ringlock components from different suppliers are interchangeable. OSHA also requires components from different manufacturers to fit without force and maintain structural integrity when intermixed.
